Leonard "Soldier" Iheagwam
Leonard Iheagwam, known as SOLDIER, is a rising star in the new wave of multidisciplinary visual artists emerging from London. Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, his early works—dominated by his signature camouflage patterns—sparked controversy with the Nigerian military but have since grown into a broader exploration of identity, consumerism, and human experience. SOLDIER’s art defies both geographical and conceptual boundaries, addressing themes of misplaced militancy and unreciprocated force, while challenging the constraints of tradition. Iheagwam’s childhood was shaped by the juxtaposition of his father’s role as a priest and the energetic skateboarding culture of Lagos. At 16, he left home, supporting himself by selling his drawings and co-founding the multidisciplinary skate crew Motherlan with close friends Onyedi Iriele and Olaolu Slawn. His artistic trajectory shifted when he secured a spot at the University of Westminster, a move that brought him to London, where he has become a significant figure in the city's creative landscape. His debut solo exhibition at INCUBATOR Gallery marked his entry into the wider art world. SOLDIER’s artistic practice spans various mediums, including painting, sculpture, military surplus, and skateboards. His inspirations are equally diverse, drawing from pop culture, African history, and religious symbolism. Known for his prolific output, SOLDIER has collaborated with prestigious fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Nike while also producing deeply personal works that intersect performance art, painting, and sculpture. His creations provoke thought, challenging societal expectations and urging audiences to reconsider the paths they are told to follow.
